“Inspiration is the unforeseen quantity, the muse that assails at the hidden hour. The arrows fly and one is unaware of being struck, and that a host of unrelated catalysts have joined clandestinely to form a system of its own, rendering one with the vibrations of an incurable disease — a burning imagination — at once unholy and divine.”
The above script is from the introduction of Patti Smith’s book Devotion. My concept revolves around this idea of “muse.” I wanted to depict my model Ines’s attempts of trying to deal with the “inspiration” she feels within her. The candles in the portraits are a metaphor for that inspiration. They portray the double-edged sword, the dangerous yet thrilling fire, the paradox of light and shadow. The mirror she holds against her chest is a metaphor for the emptiness that grows into a reflection of light. Both the above script and Ines deal with the internal conflict that results from “a burning imagination”. In this series of photographs, that internal conflict is personalized as light and shadow.
